Session Information

Philip is a Principal in the New York office of McKinsey & Company. He co-leads the firm’s Payments Practice and works extensively with a diverse set of financial services, non-financial and technology firms on a broad array of strategic, operations and organizational issues.  Relevant client experience includes:

Credit Card (issuing, acquiring, processing and network)

Developed a new acquisition strategy for a leading credit card issuer including universe expansion, value-based line assignment, customer level NPV decisioning.  Improved new accounts booked by 15%Repositioned the brand and re-launched credit card value proposition for a leading card issuer based upon learnings from quantitative and qualitative primary researchAssisted a major credit card issuer in improving its micro-marketing capabilities including behavioral segmentation and profitability modelingDeveloped a growth strategy for a payments network including product and market focus, competitive positioning and organizational redesignRedesigned organizational model for leading card issuer; implemented cost reduction program to eliminate over 7% of operating costsDeveloped a growth strategy for a processor outside its core processing businessAssisted a merchant acquirer to create and implement a segment-based pricing strategy.  Redesigned the sales organization including redeploying field and major account sales forcesAssisted many non-U.S. clients in building and improving performance of non-US credit card businesses (e.g., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, UK, Italy, China, and South Korea).

Retailer/Merchant Payments and Private Label Credit Card

Philip has led major payments research efforts at the firm and written extensively on the U.S. payments industry, credit/debit cards, merchant acquiring and emerging payment opportunities.  Philip holds an M.B.A. from New York University and a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania.
